© W&W After coming together by pure accident in 2007, it's been on wards and upwards for the team of W&W, otherwise known as Wardt van der Harst & Willem van Hanegem. We catch up for a quick word...

It’s been almost 5 years since Wardt van der Harst nudges past Willem van Hanegem at Trance Energy and embraced a single vision for trance music which resulting in W&W being formed. This year they had their first landmark release in the form of ‘Impact’, their debut artist album. It’s an album that comes after more than 15 singles before it such as ‘Mainstage’, ‘Arena’, ‘D.N.A’ and ‘Alpha’. They have been almost exclusively tied to Captivating sounds since their first release back in 2008 and it is that label which finds a home for their debut long player. Their aim is to make an ‘Impact’ on the electronic dance music scene with their own flair for producing trance and with their debut album they have certainly accomplished that. We thought a word was in order for their thoughts on 2011 and on the new album.

i:Vibes: Thanks guys for taking some time to talk to ivibes. Autumn is hear and winter is only around the corner. Looking back on the summer of 2011 what was your most memorable expereicne in the club and in the studio?

W&W: Our entire summer has been a crazy one actually. We played so many great festivals! The most memorable moment in the studio was probably when we made the rework of Delirium - Silence together with Jonas Stenberg. That tune has definitely been our summer anthem, we literally played it at every gig.

i:Vibes: Congratulation on reaching #36 on the 2011 DJ Magazine top 100. You guys moved up from position 71. How flattering is this honor considering it seems like less trance artists are being voted?

W&W: Thank you very much! Of course its very flattering and we wanna thank everybody who voted for us. But we try not to look at it too much, we focus on the music and to get our music heard by as much people as possible. That's our main goal.

i:Vibes: You have only been together since 2007. Are you surprised by the quick rise of W&W in the last years?

W&W: Yes definitely! Everything went so fast. Most of the time you don't even realize it because you adapt to it so easily. But sometimes when u have a moment of rest and think about everything that happened over the past few years you realize it has been a crazy journey so far!

i:Vibes: You have released your debut album Impact which has 7 hot releases on it from 2011. Usually an album is released and the tracks follow. Why did it take so long to release the album?

W&W: We didn't want to let the people wait for so long. We released tunes like AK-47 and Impact way before we even finished the album as we just didn't want to hold those tunes back for so long. It took so long because we wanted everything to be perfect, we spent hours and hours in the studio just finalizing everything.

i:Vibes: The name Impact for the album is very catchy. Any particular reason why you chose this name?

W&W: ''Impact'' is something that really fits our whole musical taste and style. We always want our music to have impact on a dance floor.

i:Vibes: What was your goal with the album sound wise and what was the production time?

W&W: It took us more than 1,5 years to produce it because we kept evolving during the production of it. So overtime we learned something new, we didn't like the older stuff so we had to come up with something new. We wanted it to be a very broad album, not just 15 of the same sounding tracks. We like a lot of different genres in EDM too besides trance so we implemented a lot of different sounds on the album.

i:Vibes: What exactly are the duties in the studio between you guys?

W&W: Mostly Willem comes up with a general idea, then Ward plays something on the piano while Willem is designing a sound. Then Ward programs some beats and we just take it from there.

i:Vibes: Armin van Buuren has been one of W&W biggest supporters in the last years. What been the most satisfying words that he has given you along the way?

W&W: At ASOT 450 in Bratislava when Armin told all his millions of listeners that if he had to put his money on somebody he'd put it on us, that was pretty satisfying.

i:Vibes: You start off the album with “Do not skip”. The title might get the idea not to go to track 2 and skip track 1. Why did you start this as the opener?

W&W: It's the track itself; you really have to listen to the entire song to understand it. It you would skip through it, it wouldn't make sense. We wanted to do a special opening tune. So we decided to just open with some atmospheres and a simple chord progression which then bursts out into some weird electro kind of thing.

i:Vibes: You start AK-47 with acid sample. What exactly does acid mean to you guys and what is AK-47?

W&W: The acid sounds originate from the real oldschool rave music. AK-47 is quite a party tune too so we figured that a acid sound would fit it perfectly. Then we found this cool sample of a guy saying ''Acid'' which suited perfectly to the track.

i:Vibes: What was your inspiration behind Based on a true story? The song seems to have a very defined soundscape.

W&W: A few years ago we were really into that deeper and darker minimalistic kind of trance and we wanted to implement that on our album as well. That's how we came up with Based On A True Story.

i:Vibes: What was it like working with Ana Criado one of the rising vocalists in trance. What do you like most about her voice?

W&W: It was great working with Ana, we're big fans of her voice, she sings very emotional. When she send us the vocals she did for 3 o'Clock we instantly loved it!

i:Vibes: Soundwise what cookie is being stored in the cookie jar for W&W?

W&W: We like to play a bit clubby at our live sets so we wanted something like that on the album too. Cookie Jar has those dry and danceable clubby beats. and combined with the big synth in the break it's a perfect tune for the dance floor.

i:Vibes: Nowhere to go is a beautiful vocal track. Is it more challenging for W & W to write a vocal track compared to a instrumental track?

W&W: Thank you! It's quite a difference to write a vocal tune or an instrumental actually. When you write a vocal track you have to keep some space for the vocals to come out. But we definitely like it both, instrumentals and vocals

i:Vibes: How have the responses been on the dance floor to Code Red? Do the people dance as if there were a code red?

W&W: The responses have been great! Everytime we played it people go nuts, and that is exactly what the idea was with this tune. The mysterious and long buildup always gets all the hands in the air.

i:Vibes: What was the most important thing Ummet Ozcan gave to the track Velicity?

W&W: Ummet came up with the main riff for Velicity so that's pretty important. We love working with Ummet as he's such a multitalented guy!

i:Vibes: Treasure Chest is a beautiful track with Leon Bolier. How much fun was it working with him? It is easy to see which parts of the track were done by him.

W&W: It was great working with Leon as he is such a musical guy! We did one track with him for his album so we decided to do one for our album too.

i:Vibes: State of emergency featuring Emily has a nice break. Was this a difficult track to produce or did you guys bang it out quickly?

W&W: State Of Emergency actually took quite a while. We had the setup laying around for a long time but we thought it missed something. When Emily came up with her great vocals we finished it right away.

i:Vibes: Beta is featured on the new Technoclub Vol 37 with Talla 2XLC. What is your fondest memory of the Technoclub in Frankfurt Germany?

W&W: We actually played for a Technoclub party last year's summer as we co-mixed one of the CD's together with Talla. A bit of an underground feeling but a great vibe and a very enthusiastic crowd!

i:Vibes: You finish the album with Search for tomorrow. Why was this the perfect closing track for the album?

W&W: We love to close down with a more trancy and emotional track at our live sets so we figured let's do that on the album too. That way you give the people a good feeling after listening to it.

i:Vibes: What do you guys want that the listener to remember most from this album?

W&W: The impact it made on them :)
