© OrkideaHe's celebrating twenty years in the business this year is Finnish DJ & producer Orkidea but one place through the years he's never played is Talla 2XLC's legendary Technoclub. On the 3rd December he will be putting that right...

It’s been amazing twenty years since me and my friends started organizing illegal raves in the squat houses of Helsinki in early 90s. Most bizarre experience must have been DJing for Jean-Paul Gaultier and Helena Christensen at a Berlin fetish club Kit Kat after their first ever Berlin show. Most flashy ones have been entertaining the rich & famous of Hong Kong or Russia while warming up Chemical Brothers, Paul van Dyk or Underworld was something I’ll never forget. From the venues I’ve DJed Tresor in Berlin, Pacha in Ibiza, Ministry of Sound in London and CODE in Tokyo were special places to play.

My recording career started in 1998 with Slusnik Luna’s Nicklas Renqvist. ‘Unity‘ was signed to british Steelfish label and found it’s way to Gatecrasher and Renaissance compilations. Sasha and Oakenfold opened their Essential Mixes with it and Pete Tong played it on BBC Radio 1. Gigs with DJ Tiesto lead into signing to his Black Hole label while other releases include ‘Embrace’ on Five AM and ‘Beautiful‘ on Sential (finnish national singles chart #1). Most famous colaborations include ‘YearZero‘ together with Andy Moor, ‘God’s Garden‘ together with David West and ‘Zeitgeist‘ with Solarstone. My remixes include Aalto’s ‘Rush‘ made together with Super8, Stage One remix made for Hooj Choons, Way Out West’s ‘Killa‘ and more recently a bootleg remix of Hans Zimmer’s ‘Time‘ from Inception soundtrack which Paul Oakenfold loved so much he did his own edit. In 2011 I released my third artist album “20” which also celebrates my twenty years of DJing.

As promoters we have come a very long way from the days of illegal warehouse raves. Together with my friends, we have run Club Unity for over ten years, promoted Renaissance’s events in Helsinki and organized events called “Pacifique” for almost 3000 people in a water park. We have had fun at 16 hour Sunday clubbing sessions at DTM and have brought Jose Padilla to Finland. We have organised events on boats, in parks, on ice-skating rinks and even did one of Finland’s first flash mobs: the infamous One Minute Raves. The longest set I’ve ever played was 23 hours on New Year’s Day in 2010. To me electronic music and club culture has always been about open-mindness, unity amongst people and pushing the musical boundaries forward, whether it’s ambient concert in a park or full on rave in warehouse. Uniting the sounds, the minds, the people.

It's surprising then that in twenty years he's not played at Germany’s legendary Technoclub night hosted by Talla 2XLC. Well, on the 3rd December he will be ticking off that on his to DJ at list when he plays alongside Talla and Paul Webster. He’s one of Finland’s greatest talents and his solo productions and remixes over the past twelve years have been outstanding. We thought a few words from the man himself were in order ahead of his Technoclub debut for his thoughts.

i:Vibes: Thanks Orkidea for taking some time to talk to ivibes.nu. 2011 is almost over and what has been your coolist moment in the club and studio in 2011?

Orkidea: In the studio: listening to the final version of my album for th first time. In the club: playing an Orkidea Live PA in front of 3000 people here in Helsinki at Whiteout 2012 event.

i:Vibes: What was your overall opinion about the results of the 2011 DJ Mag Top 100? David Guetta as #1 and less trance djs than usual?

Orkidea: It reflects very much what is happening in the world right now. Guetta is without doubt the biggest name on the planet and the commercial big room sound of his is currently bigger than trance so no surprise with the trance guys dropping little bit. DJin isn't about DJ Mag positions - it's about playing great records at great parties.

i:Vibes: You will be making your Technoclub debut in December at the 27 years Technoclub party. How much does it mean to you to be playing in this legendary club?

Orkidea: Very much! I'm celebrating this year my 20 years behind the decks and Frankfurt has always been one of THE cities in the world for trance music and Technoclub probably THE oldest club in the world for this music so I'm honored to be part of the celebrations.

i:Vibes: When was the first time that you heard the name Talla 2XLC?

Orkidea: Don't remember exactly but I think it was around 1993/1994 in relation with Tetsuo or Suck Me Plasma.

i:Vibes: How known is Talla in the Finish EDM scene?

Orkidea: He is well known with the hardcore trance heads and for some of the larger crowd but not as a mainstream name. He has played only once in Finland in 2006 so that affects too.

i:Vibes: What special question would you like to ask Talla 2XLC the most about his career?

Orkidea: When does he think "trance music" was born and what are the landmarks of the genre for him?

i:Vibes: What is your favorite Talla 2XLC track?

Orkidea: The Eternal Mystery

i:Vibes: What would an Orkidea/Talla 2XLC track sound like?

Orkidea: Energetic. Big room. Old school vibe.

i:Vibes: What can we expect from your DJ gig at Technoclub soundwise?

Orkidea: I'll be playing lots of my own productions and other finnish trance and prog goodies. There is so much amazing music coming from my home country.

i:Vibes: You are from Finland. How difficult was it getting into the trance scene?

Orkidea: Not that difficult. We just started to organize our own illegal parties in squat houses in 1992 and we were immediately part of the local scene. Breaking into the international scene was also fairly easy with my debut single Unity (co-produced by Nicklas Renqvist from Slusnik Luna) being played by John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong etc. Also promoting events with artists like Sven Väth, Oakey, Eric Prydz, Pete Tong, Jose Padilla, Nick Warren etc has opened lot of doors and created good connetions.

i:Vibes: Who were your early musical inspirations as a kid?

Orkidea: Vangelis, Jarre, Pink Floyd... later on Cosmic Baby, Paul van Dyk, Eye Q Records.

i:Vibes: Your first production was Unity in 1999. Do you remember with what equipment this track was made with?

Orkidea: Bassline was from Juno 106, lead riff from JP8000 and drums from TR-909. Yamaha CS2X was used for some pads and JD800 for the freaky Goa sound.

i:Vibes: How has your sound developed since Unity?

Orkidea: It's more refined, dynamic and has more confidence but hopefully still has that gentle old school atmosphere.

i:Vibes: A classic Orkidea track is "Beautiful". Was this a track that was difficult to produce or did you bang it out quickly?

Orkidea: It started out as a chill out track but the club version came together very quickly.

i:Vibes: You produced Slowmotion and Zeitgeist with Solarstone. What was the most important thing that you learned from Rich aka Solarstone?

Orkidea: All of our collabs have started from his chill out track scetches and melodies so I guess haveing a good riff/melody is always important.

i:Vibes: Your Rush remix with Super 8 is unforgeteble. What made this remix so timeless?

Orkidea: I guess the vibe in the studio was right, it was the first collab we made and of course the chords and melody of the original was a good one to work on. You can't plan success I think.

i:Vibes: What future productions can we expect from you?

Orkidea: I'll be definitely doing some alternative versions of the "20" album tracks so those will be the first ones you'll hear.

i:Vibes: If you could be stuck in the studio with anyone for 24 hours, who would you choose to produce a track with?

Orkidea: BT. The greatest genious of all time within the EDM scene.

i:Vibes: Which German trance producer do you respect the most?

Orkidea: Ooh... there are too many to choose from! Oliver Lieb, Ralf Hildenbeutel, Cosmic Baby, PvD, Humate guys, Stevie B-Zet, Jam & Spoon, DJ Dag... the list goes on and on. German is THE country for great trance.

i:Vibes: What do you remember most from your warmup set before Paul van Dyk played. Could he give you any advice?

Orkidea: First time I played with him in 1996. He didn't give me any advice but was very nice and humble person. I've always had lots of respect for him.

i:Vibes: What was your most crazy DJ experience so far in your DJ career?

Orkidea: Playing at the KitKat club in Berlin with people having openly sex there and Jean Paul Gaultier and Helena Christensen coming to visit after JPG's first ever Berlin show. Unreal!

i:Vibes: What do you like to do most to get away from the strenous DJ lifestyle?

Orkidea: Just seeing friends and spending some chillaxing time with family at home is the best way to relax. Finnish tranquil nature is a great getaway too.

i:Vibes: What are your top 5 alltime favorite tracks?

Orkidea: Sasha: Xpander
Slusnik Luna: Sun
KLF: Last Train To Trancentral
BT & PvD: Flaming June
Planet Funk: Chase The Sun

i:Vibes: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Orkidea: Still having the two careers I have: producing/DJing and sound design. Making better music and travelling around the world DJing with a unique sound of trance.

i:Vibes: If you played your last ever DJ set, with what track would you end your DJ set?

Orkidea: I have no intention to stop until I die, but if I would need to choosen then THE track which defines me most as a DJ is Orkidea: Unity so that would be my choice.
