Denis Sheperd returns to Germanys iconic Technoclub on the 11th February to launch the clubs new compilation he's mixed together with Talla 2XLC. We caught a word with Dennis before he steps behind the decks for the second time...
Things are looking very promising for Dennis Sheperd as we get deeper into 2012. Having debut his artist album last year ‘Tribute To Life’ and made his Technoclub debut this time last year he aims to build on that to make this year an even better one. Thing’s will start to pick up come the 11th February as he returns to Talla 2XLC’s iconic Technoclub for the launch party of the 38th edition of Talla’s compilation series. It’s a series Talla ask Dennis to help me and he’s duly obliged. They go head to head on the 11th for what will be a very big night in the familiar surrounds of Frankfurt, Germany. Ahead of this, we went for a quiet word with Dennis.
i:Vibes: Dennis thanks for taking some time to talk to i:Vibes. You gave your fans quite scare recently stating you had tinnitus. How is your ear coming along?
Dennis: Hey, my right ear is getting better and better. I’ve already played two gigs again and there wasn't a problem. The problem with my ears came because of a guy who used forbidden and too loud fireworks. A shame but we can't change it.
i:Vibes: As a DJ, you are used to loud club noise, but I guess no one ever really believes he will get tinnitus. How difficult was this time having this problem and not being able to be 100% there as an artist the way you would like to be?
Dennis: It was very difficult. I was afraid I couldn't produce music and perform as a DJ anymore. But it all ended up well and I'm so glad about that!
i:Vibes: Not a good way to start 2012 with tinnitus, but what are your goals for 2012?
Dennis: Releasing new single releases with lovely singers, releasing my collaboration with Markus Schulz, starting my own podcast, playing more and bigger gigs! The usual stuff.
i:Vibes: Your music career has gone very well and quickly for you and seems to be making rapid development. How excited were you when Talla 2XLC asked you to mix the Technoclub vol 38?
Dennis: It was very nice and I felt honored. I’ve always wanted to compile and mix a compilation. I was glad to see that he believes in my talent.
i:Vibes: When you were younger, was the Technoclub a compilation that you always bought?
Dennis: No, I was more listening and recording radio shows like 1Live Partyservice. Anyway, I have bought a few Talla 2XLC single releases and remixes.
i:Vibes: How difficult was it making the right track selection for the Technoclub vol 38?
Dennis: It was quite difficult. I wanted to find the perfect balance between an actual club set of me and a set for home-listening. I think I was successful in this.
i:Vibes: What can we expect from your mix of the Technoclub vol 38? Will it be mostly hits and some tracks of you, or will there be some new unreleased tracks of 2012 on it?
Dennis: Some new unreleased tracks like a new single release by Headstrong or a new remix of mine of a track with vocals by Kirsty Hawkshaw. But of course I also had to use some hits. I'm also very glad I was able to include one of my favorite tracks of the moment: The KhoMha remix of Matt Darey's "Hold Your Breath".
i:Vibes: It has been more than a year since your first official visit to the Technoclub? What do you still remember from this great night?
Dennis: I remember the interview with you in the backroom, hehe. I remember a great crowd. It was so much fun playing there. And it was also nice meeting Talla for the first time.
i:Vibes: What new surprises can we await from your Technoclub DJ set?
Dennis: Oh, well. If I tell them now, they aren't surprises anymore.
i:Vibes: If you were stranded on a deserted island for Talla 2XLC for one day with three things, what would they be and how would you spend the day with Talla 2XLC?
Dennis: A shisha, some cocktails and of course good music! I would spend the day chilling at the beach!
i:Vibes: What is your all time favorite Talla 2XLC track?
Dennis: It's his remix of "Enjoy The Silence" is definitely an all-time favorite.
i:Vibes: How would your remix sound like if you could remix that favorite track?
Dennis: It would be different, very different from Talla's version and a more house vibe attempt, big for the clubs right now.
i:Vibes: How was the brain storming with Talla 2XLC with the new collaboration? Talk a little how the ideas to the music came about?
Dennis: We were sending ideas and melodies back and forth. And then we found this one, exactly fitting melody and built a track around that. The bassline is by the way inspired by the actual electro-sound.
i:Vibes: You have been busy with the release of your debut album A Tribute to life. What was most difficult in getting this album exactly the way you wanted to?
Dennis: The productions themselves, because I'm a perfectionist!
i:Vibes: One of the hits of 2011 was Fallen Angel with Cold Blue. When you had finished the track, did you ever think that it would be as successful as it has been?
Dennis: No, never. It was such a big surprise.
i:Vibes: Cold Blue is one of those rare German producer talents. What always fascinates you about his sound?
Dennis: I think it’s his beautiful and magical melodies. He always receives a special feeling in his tracks.
i:Vibes: How difficult was it producing this track. How were the studio duties shared between you and Cold Blue?
Dennis: It was quite difficult because the vocals were written on another playback and we produced and composed a whole new playback together.
i:Vibes: What are your fondest memories of making some day with No more alone vocalist Stephen Pickup?
Dennis: He's a really nice guy and it was quite relaxing working with him.
i:Vibes: Anymore plans to have Boston vocalist Marcie sing on a future track?
Dennis: Not at the moment. But who knows, maybe there will be another opportunity some day.
i:Vibes: You recently had a gig with Kyau & Albert. What always amazes you about this German trio when you hear them play?
Dennis: Actually it's a duo. I love their productions and especially production quality. They always produce top notch stuff.
i:Vibes: How has been the feedback for your remix of “First Scream” Ostrega?
Dennis: Awesome! It seems are waiting for the 23.01.2012, which is the release-date of that remix.
i:Vibes: Where do you want to see Dennis Sheperd in five years?
Dennis: At the top!!! ;)
i:Vibes: What was the last DVD movie that you saw?
Dennis: It was ‘Friends with benefits’ with Justin Timberlake as an actor. I've actually watched on my flight back from Canada, where I recently had a gig.
