Germany's biggest annual indoor electronic music festival celebrates the newest annual episode. Under the motto "Made in Germany", more than 25.000 ravers are awaited with an awesome line-up...
"The music stopped, a siren started wailing, flashes of light. And when the bass came in again, all hell was let loose and I realised: the future has arrived!"
That's how many experienced it at that time - those who invented "ravin", in December 1991, at the first MAYDAY. Last year, two decades later, 27,000 visitors celebrated the 20th anniversary - a record! A golden festival that overwhelmed many. "Twenty Young" underlines the special position of the "Mother of all Raves", which is a role model for countless parties from Holland to Russia and from Japan to South America. MAYDAY has grown into a brand over two decades and it is certainly high time it was presented with an award: the hallmark of outstanding quality "Made in Germany".
This hallmark has for a long time stood for the best quality Germany has to offer. Products from key areas of industry such as mechanical engineering and the car industry bear this mark and conquer the global markets. And if anyone hadn't realised it before, it was the 2006 World Cup in Germany which conclusively showed to the world: they can even party, the Teutons! The stereotype of the bourgeois Germans was laid to rest - which you could have actually guessed back in 1991 after the first MAYDAY. It was at that time that something came into being which still today has a positive impact all over the world, for MAYDAY saw the birth of the rave and in turn a new and highly successful export. And with it, values such as tolerance, respect and openness.
It's not the first time that the crucial momentum for a musical epoch has come from Germany: Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner were "pop stars" of classical music. Today they go by such names as Paul van Dyk, Sven Vaeth and Westbam. The sound: in keeping with the digital age. They are ambassadors of a peaceful and tolerant musical culture made in Germany. And millions dance to it, at raves à la Mayday formula. Even the Goethe Institute, which fosters German culture around the world, has recognised it as an "important German cultural export".
MAYDAY "Made in Germany" - that's an invitation to the world, more tempting than ever: over 50 DJs and LiveActs will be coming to Dortmund. Certainly not just from Germany because numerous other nations are sending their most innovative artists to the Mayday homeland as well. And with the 2011 anniversary floor "Twenty Young Dome" remaining, the spirit of the first years will also be omnipresent in the venerable halls of the Westfalenhalle. As will MAYDAY's global spirit:
Welcome to Germany! Welcome to MAYDAY!
The Line-Up:
Arena: "Native Instruments", "Ableton", "Steinberg" - in the music software sector "Made in Germany" is in the driving seat. Developments such as "Traktor", "Live" and "Cubase" have revolutionised the art of producing and deejaying. No more than a handful of artists still play only the good old vinyls. There's simply no denying that you've got so many more possibilities with computers, software and controllers: direct access to 20,000 tracks on the hard drive instead of 100 records in your case. And you can create a totally new interpretation on stage for each track and remix it for spontaneous compositions. The result: digital creation generating analogue mass euphoria - welcome to the ManMachineArena!

Empire:
Even the best song hasn't got a cat in hell's chance if you get verbal rubbish dribbling out of the speakers. No such chance with techno because the track replaces the song, and the rhythm the melody to create the ultimate dance experience. Lyrics? They just get in the way. The few vocals that do appear are usually samples which then submit to the beat and metamorphose to an instrument. The mind has finished work for the day - no more messages need to be "processed". It's just pure music, pure pleasure, real techno. Now that's what good feelings are about!

Factory:
Gabber comes from Holland but the birthplace of hard core lies on the river Main. In 1990 the Frankfurter Marc Acardipane looks musically into the future: the track "We Have Arrived" injects unprecedented explosive power into electronic music and is way ahead of its time. Many techno insiders capitulate. Too excessive! Still. Two years later, Holland: Paul Elstak launches "Rotterdam Records". ROT01 fuses the Acardipane approach with total Oranje sound anarchy - and with "Amsterdam Waar Lech Dat Dan" gabber house is born. These two records are the roots of hard style, of industrial and of hard techno. It is the pioneering spirit of the visionaries in Frankfurt and Rotterdam which has made the Factory possible. It is your energy which will never let hard core die.

Mixery-Casino:
Glitter and orbs were yesterday; today, house music is above all deep, driving and progressive. Since the glamorous days of the disco era in the late 70s, it has developed quite a few stylistic dissenters - sometimes minimalistically reduced, at other times grandiose and agitated. But house is always what drives us on and gets people up on the floor. Any extreme is possible here in the Mixery-Casino and anything goes. Fluffy sounds for the warm-up are just as popular as pounding basses for the peak time and subdued minimal for the late hours. This floor lures the young people and at the same time uplifts the hearts and souls of the older ones. A thoughtful and appealing mix of everything that moves us today. Music is a feeling here. Has got a heart. Is pure love.

Twenty Young Dome: Marusha plays "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and thousands sing along enthusiastically. That's how it was at MAYDAY 1994 - and that is how it was at MAYDAY 2011! An additional floor was set up for MAYDAY's twentieth anniversary to revive the original rave feeling. DJs and ravers who were there at the very beginning of MAYDAY together celebrated a time they thought had been forgotten: glow sticks in the fog, crackling vinyl records and acid house vibes. What Ravers Nature and Andy Duex kicked off last year will now be continued by Mark' Oh and Genlog at "Made in Germany": want to get a load of "Rave Olympia", "Judgement Day" or "Raving Society" again? The Twenty Young Dome makes time travel possible. And as of right now it is an integral part of each and every MAYDAY.
