UK producer Chicane aka Nick Bracegirdle recently released his 5th studio album 'Thousand Mile Stare', and we thought it was an great occasion to have a talk with him!
Hi Nick, nice to have you onboard here at the i:Vibes site! How are you doing at the moment, and where in the world do we find you right now?
At home preparing to leave for a show or three
So your new album ‘Thousand Mile Stare’ has just been released, please tell us about it, and how has the reactions been so far?
Reactions have been great, I’m pleased, was number one dance and a good showing generally, can’t complain
How long did it take to produce the album from start to finish, and what feeling did you had inside when you had finished it?
It took best part of a year and when I was finished I was on a high, sometimes you can feel a bit deflated but because we ended in Iceland with Vigri it was all good
In the booklet you tell us about the title of the album and where you got it from, can you tell our readers more about that and how the title name came up, and what was the inspiration for this album?
Ha! They can read the booklet. I think the title really came from the beginning when you have no idea what or where you’re going and there’s a surreal panic
On the album you work with, among others, a band from Island, can you tell us more about that project, and how did you came across them and how was it to work with them?
Iceland; someone played me the album and I knew straight away they would sound great and understand what I meant
The album spreads out deep and wide when it comes to musical genres, do you think it’s important as a producer, to be able to show and produce many different tracks/various genres instead of just sticking to one/a few?
Nothing is planned in that way, I think the thing that surprises me about the album is that it works as an album, as the sum of it’s parts.
When you look at the cover for the album, you could draw some parallels to some of the re-leases from Jean Michel Jarre, did you get the idea to the cover from there, and is he in some way an inspiration to you or?
Funny that! His management got a bit shirty about it; I would have thought a French-man would have understood the meaning of ‘Homage’. JMJ changed my life in so much as I heard Oxygene and thought what the hell is that? I was hooked on electron-ic. He is, an overlooked god of electronic music, I’ve been saying that all my career.
Do you have, or is there, any plan of an album tour?
Touring the album is difficult, getting the various people all in one place and all. We did a show in London in April which sold out – thanks for that – and the Vigri boys came over, Aggi was there, and Kate Walsh and….. all the usual suspects.
Can you give/take us on a mini cruise through the album, try to put some words on each track maybe?
That defeats the object of music being subjective. I think it was Rupert Graves when as ked about various works said, that’s for you to decide
This is your fifth studio album, in what way would you say or describe that this release is different from your previous releases?
It connects with Far From… it is a me being me, and using all the experiences and things I didn’t know in say, 1996 or 97.
After listening to the album, I felt, that it in a very good and strong way speaks to you in a very emotional way, is that somehow the sort of message you want to send or set within the listener, or is there a special message you want to send to the listener through the album?
I just think we listen to things and they either emote or are linked to experiences, good and bad, sometimes, it really is in the eye of the beholder. I cannot be that presumptious to think otherwise.
Was there any special moments during the album process/recording, which stands out for you as a special or maybe touching moment?
Going to Iceland, smelling the rotting fish they tried to make me eat, and feeling I was among likeminded madmen.
You have been on the EDM scene for a very long time, and produced for many years. How do you think that your music and sound has changed or evolved from the beginning of your career up till now?
I’m not that retrospective, have no interest in it really. It’s changed because I have but it would drive you mad trying to think about why and how
If you could choose, which artist/producer/composer/vocalist etc. would you like to be or work with for one day if possible?
With new album I worked with people I found on the way and it was enlightening. That said, corny as it is maybe Eno, or Sakamoto, what about Lady Gaga? I’m open to of-fers - a bit like when I sit down to write – open to offers.
Lastly, what are the plans for Chicane for the rest of 2012 and can we expect any new re-leases/remixes soon or?
Yep, Touring live more records. I’m just finishing a collaboration with Ferry Corsten and I’m excited as a fish on the line about that one.
Those where the questions from us Nick, thanks a lot for letting us take your time, and thanks for the answers. Best of luck with the album and for you, take care!
Stay safe Sven and Ivibes.nu! Thanks Nick
