© LangeIt's always good to get an insight into the mind of a trance artists in today's scene of miss matched genres. Lange's latest comments on just what Trance music is in today's context is fascinating...

The sound of trance today is completed different to what it was over a decade ago and there is always the argument that today’s sound is not as driving as the one's notched in music history. The new breed of tracks will never match up to the old classics in a few electronic music fans eyes. Lange asks a very debatable question tonight on his social media outlet, 'What Is REAL Trance To You?' Trance can mean many things in today’s climate with so many variations in style. The one statement that I know is true is that trance is not dead but its future direction is not one that’s plain to see.

You can read Lange's thoughts on it right below and while your at it be sure to check out a preview of his remix for Dash Berlin's 'When You Were Around' as it got me just a little bit exited.

What is REAL Trance to you?

There's a lot of talk at the moment about trance returning to it's "roots". But what are it's "true" roots and has everyone got a different idea about what trance is?

I guess the time you got into the scene is going to have a pretty big impact on what you think trance is and where it came from. Some people cite 1998-2000, others much later. Personally my early Trance experiences were in the early 90s, but I suppose I see 97-99 as my roots career-wise.

It seems a lot of people think real Trance has to be 140 bpm 'uplifting'. I believe Trance can span a range of bpms and styles; it's all about the feeling Trance Music gives you. (cheesy to say, but true). Is my latest single 'We Are Lucky People' (130 bpm) Trance? It is to me.

Even if we do look back to the late 90s again there is a difference between what we were doing here in the UK, with the likes of The Thrillseekers, Solarstone, myself and many others, compared to the Euro Trance that Ferry Corsten etc were creating. Some complain about trance mixing in with other genre's in recent times but it's been going on for a long time (e.g. my Symmetry C Breakbeat Remix from back in 1999!)

Many creative, forward thinking artists have pushed the sound forward over the past few years, and ironically some have been criticised for doing tracks 5 years ago which are now considered modern-day Trance classics!

So maybe we shouldn't be too hasty in making such a closed definition of what Trance is? The sound has been evolving so much over the last 15, even 20 years, can we really pinpoint what "real" trance is? To me it's a feeling you get, the euphoria, the goosebumps, regardless of the BPM which a lot of people seem to fixate on when defining the genre.

I agree, it's time for Trance to make it's mark again and I think 2013 is going to be a vintage year, but what is trance to you?
