Head Affect are new on the scene for most of us, but most of the major DJ's have had their hands on this white label for a while-Anthony Pappa has used it at least 3 times for big known events... is it that good????
Head Affect-"Affrochrome" (Thunk Records)
3 tracks on this white label.... all are un-named mixes.. but for conveniance i have labelled it A,B,C .....
A SIDE-One sided mix...A B SIDE- Tracks B + C....
A SIDE: Track A: Starting out with a catchy little intro and spacey effect, affrochrome seems as though it has the poise of what will be a good track. After a couple of phrases the bassline kicks in with some cool little "shuffling" effects and the echo of a bell to take you into the next sequence. The main sound builds from the depths of the track and gradually works its way to the top. the sound is hard to describe- an almost screeching effect. The sound has been changed a couple pf times but joined together at diffeent sections to add a funky edge. At the quarter stage the track takes a turn for the deep and heavy. The bassline changes and rumbles whilst the effects take full pace on top. A mini break hits you into the siren which rolls into the main break of the day at the half way stage. Its combines the bell effect with a few high hats to weave its way to almost a total stand still. On most other tracks you would expect it to end there-but "affrochrome" devastatingly gains full gear again. The screeching effect is again moved around and changed slightly to give a different sound to the track. The tracks ends with "half beats" ideal for a good mix cos it keeps the ffects packed in till the end.
B SIDE: Track B: The "B track" starts out with a low melody which is lightly joined with a couple effects. It is a slow bulding track. It takes a good four/five phrases for the bass to begin. There is a slight pause before it does kick in. You expect it to be quite dominent-but instead it is the opposite. It's almost a light "tom" sounding bassline. The intro to a little detroit style house vibe leaves this track a bit weirder than expected. keyboard/piano synths are used to give the track another twist. It hits the breakdown after the half way stage-which consists of nothing more than the keyboard synths. The bassline appears in no spectacular fashion. The track tries to gain some sort of funky aspect towards the end-this is short lived and the track rolls to a close with the sound of the main section.
B SIDE Track C: If i thought "track B" was weird then "track C" starts out weirder. An almost mini breaks tom effect with a touch of a "RUN DMC" type effect. Added is a distorted sound which sound like a chopped vocal. The track is chugging and in a weird sense quite catchy. It drops again but leave the chopped vocal to bring in a little funky number. This takes a step towards the harder side of life. The tracj has bit of pace t it now and seems to have got a bit louder. It has got a bit of attention. A little melody is progressing behind the scenes. Like on "track A" a little screeching twist is added. The main break at the middle of the track halts to a soft synth. Its edging on "cheesy". A twisted synth takes action and leads the track through the latter stages.
MMM..overall....you can see why "track A" is being played by Anthony Pappa so much. He signed it to his "resolutions" cd just released this week. It is a quality driving track-but when i flipped it i would have expected something a bit similar. It is good in one way that it isnt-because it makes for the vinyl to suit many various styles. With saying that i didnt find "track B" very interesting and wouldnt really listen to it. I couldnt see any DJ really giving it a fair run out. "track C" gained a little of the respect back-but again compared to "track A" its not a scratch on it. Id recommend this vinyl purely on the basis of the first track-i heard Anthony Pappa play it and its it a quality number!
let me know what you think in the i:Vibes forum.........
