© chris liebingAt the Time Warp 2002 in Mannheim, Germany, DYM got his hands on Chris Liebing, one of the most gifted Techno Artists

DYM: Where are you from and when did u start DJ'ing?

Chris Liebing: I come from Gießen in Mittelhessen, Germany. I started DJ'ing at the end of the 80’s. Before that I made music at parties because I didn’t like what other DJ’s played. I wanted to play something different. In 1990 I started to play in clubs.

DYM: How can anyone reach to be that successful? Can u give us any tips?

Chris Liebing: If I would know that, I would write a book and earn a lot of money selling it ! I just did that I wanted to, what I like and what makes fun. I didn’t give much on what other people did and I didn’t care about what they did, but I made my own style of music. I think I was just lucky that a lot of other people liked what I was doing.

DYM: Are u a resident DJ at a certain club or can we listen to your sets somewhere?

Chris Liebing: My first resident DJ- job was at the Omen in Frankfurt. That was not a planned thing. Meanwhile I am a resident at the Club U60311 in Frankfurt, Germany. I am there every Friday and I always have some guests with me. I am actually spinning my decks all across Germany. In the bigger cities like Stuttgart or Munich more often, in Hamburg and Berlin not that much. I am deejaying in other countries very often as well.

DYM: Do you like the Time Warp and other big events?

Chris Liebing: I like big events! But the mixing is what I really like. I like to play in Clubs as well as at big events. Big events are a lot of fun and you meet a lot of people. Plus you have more time cause you are not deejaying for a long time. It is a complete different feeling. And, yes of course I do like the time warp very much.

DYM: Are there any new Productions you are currently working on, or do you have any upcoming releases?

Chris Liebing: I am just working on my forthcoming Album. That will take a while, cause I am working hard on it and I will probably release it at the end of this year. Till then there wouldn’t be that much Output from me. Stigmata continues, there will be release 8 soon and before summer number nine. Butt he Album has top priority now.

DYM: You are always connected to the word / techno style „Schranz“. Can you explain what that means and what it means for you?

Chris Liebing: Ok, the word „Schranz“ was developed by a friend and me in a record store in Frankfurt, 1995. We were standing in front of the turntable and tried to categorize some vinyls, I liked to listen to, and that I’ve played in my sets and that I was looking for. We didn’t find any word for what and we came over the word „Shredder” to “schranzig (engl: schranzy ,*lol* ”. One week later when I returned to that record store, the owner had made a folder for vinyls with the word „Schranz“ on it, ane where I found the vinyl which I liked. That was the beginning of the word „Schranz“. Some time after that I made a Birthday Party in the Omen, Frankfurt, and I called the Party „Birthday Schranz“. I just wanted to describe certain sounds with that word, sounds which are too loud, bad sounding loops, Elements which are contained in those Productions I like. I never used it to describe a style of techno, but meanwhile it developed so far, that is used for describing a different style of music, what I really like a lot. But I use this word always to describe the sounds in a production. When I sit in a studio and I work on a really dark sounding sequence, then it is “schranzig” for me. I read a newspaperder some time ago, which was describing what schranz means in another way, therefore I wrotre a statement on my website, a statement to Schranz. You can read it at www.cl-rec.com

DYM: How do you like the techno scene in our days? Did something change in the past few years, and because of what do u think it changed?

Chris Liebing: I can hardly give any statement to that, because I see the scene only through my own eyes. Because my music was such a big success, I cannot say that clearly. But the scene is getting much more professional, the ones who organize events and the events themselves. Because of that you can work better as a DJ. That’s great.

DYM: What is your motto of life?

Chris Liebing: I don’t have a real motto, but I have many! I try to go there, where positive Energy is!
