Slinky came through the superclub boom and bust of the early noughties but it seems today's clubbing climate has taken it's toll on the legendary Bournemouth venue as the club will close on the 5th October...
There was a time a few years ago where superclubs ruled the scene! Massive club nights, compilations that flew off the shelves and thousands of clubbers cued round the block ready for battle. Then, the economy hit and many of the big brands went bust. The clubbing scene is a very different playing field these days, those with the money still chuck out the big gigs but those smaller promoters getting hit hard by the downturn struggle to keep afloat. Slinky came through the first wave of superclub casualties but it seems now that today’s state of affairs have put the nail in the coffin for their Bournemouth club.
They only recently celebrated their 16th Birthday with owner Lee Haslam looking to push the brand forward but he announced today the club is to close on the 5th October this year. Some of the biggest DJ’s on the planet have played for Slinky over the years and I’m sure the venue has some great memories for clubbers worldwide.
THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SLINKY
After 16 glorious years as one of the leading lights of the global electronic dance music scene, Slinky is going to be closing its doors on Saturday October 5th 2013. We feel that under the current economic climate, it is time for the brand to take a well earned rest.
This decision has not been taken lightly, as obviously Slinky has been a massive part of so many hundreds of thousands of peoples lives, but with a heavy heart and after long deliberations, Richard & I feel that it is in everyones interests to stand back and allow time to take over.
Slinky will be saying goodbye to you all on October 5th at the O2 Academy Bournemouth. The night will be a music journey over the last 16 years, a night of true classics which I think is the fitting way to end things. We hope to get tickets on sale as early as June 1st as this event will no doubt sell out in advance.
As it is our final show, we would like you, the Slinky faithful, to tell us who you would like to see perform at this classics ONLY themed event. We hope you can all come and give Slinky the send off it deserves! I know this may come as a shock to many of you especially given the success of some of our recent shows, but the reality is that UK clubbing is going through a very tough period.
Slinky.co.uk will remain active after we close as a place for you to share your memories of this legend of UK clubbing.
Slinky will always love you.
