If you have been listening to Armin van Buuren's IDT set for quite a while, you may remember a track by Hibernate titled Mane Sonitus being played constantly for weeks on end by Armin, well for those of you who were wondering who was behind it, this is the right place!
Hibernate are Joseph Borg, Kevin Bottero and Rob Andreachi. Together they represent much of the Canadian Trance / Techno live act scene with their superb live sets and productions. Here, they tell you a bit about who they are and where they stand in terms of trance and techno!
Hibernate isn't exactly a household name in the dance music industry at the moment, so would you like to give a little background on the act, and the members, their interests, likes, dislikes, etc?
Joey: That's O.K. Who wants to be Gravol! My name is Joseph Borg. Or J.M.B., or Borganism...whatever sounds coolest. I'm the producer/songwriter/programmer. I create Hibernate's music in the studio. It's pretty much up to me where we go creatively and sonicly. The other members are Kevin (Bigvibes) Bottero and Rob (Otis) Andreachi, who form the other part of the live performance. They do things on the spot with me such as live percussion sequencing and tweaking sounds on the fly, and personally, I believe that in order to create a totally breakthrough live sound you gotta have lotsa hands going at once. Kev basically got the whole thing going from the management side. Rob, being busy with spinning and spending time with a sexy-ass girlfriend, just turns up at shows. Originally, my backround lies within rock'n'roll, but tekno seems to be my life now! (That is, tekno...meaning teknoLogical music). To do what The Doors did in '67, these days you need Jupiter 6's and Supernova's.....oh, and 37,000 Megahertz of DSP Power!
Dislikes? I hate guys that think they're the shit......but strangely, I'm quite fond of myself! Go figure. Anyway, electronic music should move forward, and faster. That's why I'm here hopefully.
How would you describe the sound of Hibernate, and would it be classified under any particular genre, as in the past, there have been numerous tracks with different styles coming from Hibernate
Joey: Tell me what you like best, and it shall be so.
1. Progressive Electronic.
2. Freestyle Electronic Creativism.
3. Melodic and inspiring...musical but tasteful....hard but smooth (like C.C.)
Over the summer of 2001, Armin van Buuren picked up your Mane Sonitus, and played it more than a few times on his ID-T Radio set, and listeners were like "whoa, where did that come from!", what do you have to say to that, and many people have asked; has this track been released as a single?
Kevin: The response to Mane Sonitus has been great. Especially considering its limited North American release on our independent label Agitate Records. However, it got picked up last year by a label out of the US called Fragrant. It was supposed to be out at the end of 2001 but there's been a delay in the manufacturing and distribution. I was recently told by them that it should be out worldwide at the end of April, so keep an eye out for it.
Hibernate have been pretty big in Canada over the past few years, in terms of production exposure and gigs. Now that we're in 2002, will Hibernate push for international exposure and recognition?
Kevin: Funny that you ask that! Just earlier today we finally closed the deal on a multi-album contract with Radikal (US) who will be releasing our album worldwide through their network. They've introduced North America to names like ATB, Mauro Picotto, Gouryella and more. We're really excited about this opportunity because it'll give us the opportunity to break onto the global scene and get the recognition that our music deserves.
Who would you rate as the top producers and DJs at the moment? and would there be any chance of you guys doing any remixing and production work with them or for them?
Joey: I really don't know producers but I know Matt Darey inspired me a lot and so did Agnelli and Nelson a bit. I just used to go to raves and listen. I'm sure that in our career (which will hopefully be long) we'll do some remixes, but it won't be the main thing, you know; who knows what'll happen though!
In terms of productions, where do Hibernate see their productions moving towards for this coming year and beyond?
Joey: Very new. A complete departure from all the trance tracks and freaky tek stompers. More like album tracks. Melodies that strike deep and won't fade with the years. It will be commercial...but just cause its good...not cause its 'commercial'. Ya know?
Picture The Doors' "Break On Through" with World Class synth programming. And very hard yet awfully funky.
Are there any plans for a re-release of quality tracks such as Mane Sonitus and Advent on a European Label? As many people have tried to locate the track on Agitate but have not been able to find
Kevin: For sure, as I was mentioning earlier, Fragrant will be releasing Mane Sonitus at the end of April and Advent has been signed to another US label called Klubbworks. They'll be releasing it sometime in late spring. It should make its way over to Europe sometime soon after that.
What else would you like to add to this? General news? reviews? updates? etc?
Joey: Like Kev was mentioning before, we just wrapped up a big record deal that's gonna give us super huge worldwide distribution. And of course, in these crazy times we're living in, we intend to use our inevitable future fame to raise public awareness for world peace and stuff.....you know...the musician thang!
i:Vibes thanks Kevin and Joey from Hibernate to give this great interview! So keep an eye out at Fragrant Records! the label which brought you the massive Pistolwhip by Joshua Ryan. And if you haven't heard Hibernate yet, I would advise you make some effort to pick one of their releases out!
