It's been a while since the Paul Trainer name embraced a VANDIT sleeve but one of their major releases this week brings a new single from the Scot called 'Receptor' along with a remix from Niels von Ahorn...
It’s very good to see Paul Trainer back on the VANDIT label for the first time since 2010 when he released ‘Soundscape’ on their ‘Vandit Digital’ label. Of course now, its all gone digital so there is just one VANDIT output with the backing of Armin van Buurens Armada label. It might well be that Paul has been putting a lot of focus on his own label back then after launching Spellbinding records back in 2010. His own label has over 27 releases to date and is doing very well at bringing fresh trance to the scene. It’s trance that we all know Paul for and it’s a good dose of the uplifting stuff that he has brought with his new release ‘Receptor’. He’s not alone with the single as he’s a remix from one half of Reaves & Ahorn, Niels von Ahorn, who has ventured into the solo production world over the last year or so.

:: Original Mix :: Niels von Ahorn Remix
It’s safe to say that Paul Trainer has a very good reputation on the trance scene and you will find most of his releases slotted into the sets of some of the big jocks. Paul van Dyk is particular fan having brought him to the label a few years ago for his banging yet melodic trance music. His style does have a few switches but his melodic and uplifting trance is what I personally like from him the best. This is the Paul Trainer sound that I remember him by; tough, full of energy and packing a killer hook line. Its trance that has layer upon layer of small melodies that works in harmony to create a fast flowing uplifting atmosphere.
I’ve been very familiar with the work Niels has done when he produced under the Reaves & Ahorn duo so its to no surprise that his remix is spot on the money. It’s just as banging as the original but adopts a different softer tone and in a way, reminds me of the kind of stuff Paul van Dyk used to produce back in the late 90’s. It’s that sort of energy which you used to find in old John Askew tracks. Niels though, is very much his own producer and by no means a copy cat but knows what sort or style he likes to put forward. I would say his rendition of the melody drives a slightly more uplifting tone that would tear the house down on a big sound system.
Conclusion:
This is the sort of stuff VANDIT should release more of, none of this house ridden tripe but good solid banging trance with a hint of old school flavour to it. It’s the first Paul Trainer tune I’ve heard for a while and dam good one with a superb remix from Niels. Stuff this one on the memory stick.
