Brian is known to blend the boundaries of musical genres within his DJ sets. He takes you on a journey full of tribal rhythms and dark atmosphere that takes you back to that seedy little afterhours club you might find yourself at around 5am on a saturday morning. Where all seems uncertain except the primal thrusting of sweaty bodies and a pulsating hypnotic groove that echoes from the speakers!
BIO > Brian Stillwater the DJ/producer: Its now 2002 and the last year has seen alot of new ventures for stateside DJ/producer Brian Stillwater. As a DJ, Brian has had return trips to the UK, Switzerland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Holland, and all across the USA. Sharing his signature deep, tribal, techy, and truly "progressive" sound with a vast abundance of people worldwide. On the production front, Brian has also seen a great deal of success starting with a release of "Thirteen" on Undercurrent Recordings UK. This has been the catapult that shot his name into the mouths of key players such as John Digweed, Nick Warren, Danny Howells, Steve Lawler, Chris Forter, Jerry Bonham, Jimmy Van M, and many others. Since then many have been supportive of Brian's remixes & original productions. Brian's heavy touring schedule over the past year led to a few collaborations with other like-minded artists. His last trip to London spawned a massive deep driving progressive tune while shacked up in Sumsonic's studio for days with fellow producer Mark O'Brien (aka Darko of the Sleepfreaks). Also several trips to San Francisco turned into the "Grip Tape Ep," a collaboration with fellow skate-rats Jondi & Spesh (of Bedrock & Renaissance fame) to be released on Mechanism Records UK. While at home Brian worked with newcomer Alex Gardel to brew up the twisted "Unknown" which has already been featured on Kiss 100 by John Digweed himself and licensed to Imago Gramaphone Switzerland, the label headed by this year's hottest producer (and avid hotdog fan) - Chab! The duo also completed remixes for Dave Seager (of Orgin / Avid fame) on Undercurrent UK and Medway vs. Pete Gawtry's new one on Progress Inn UK. Other projects in the works are with Chris Cargo of Choo Choo Records and fellow DJ Louis Osbourne (yes, as in the son of Ozzy damnit!). With 2001 ending as a well stated "busy" year, Brian is back in the studio with various remix commitments and to complete the followup single to "Thirteen". February 2002 will see the release of Brian's new promotional CD "FUKD" as well as another year of steady touring...
.....Brian, I feel the start of an interview, should start with the beginning of your career, when did it all start?
I guess i started really getting into music back in the 80's when i was in high school. Listening to bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order and such.
So back in the 80's, with the change of music as it was at that time, was there a feeling of "this is what im going to be a part of"?
i'm obsessed with music... all kinds! its what i live for! thru life many things come and go but at least in my life music has always been there...
Who handed you your first major record deal, and what was its name?
The Mad Scientist "Speed" Gargoyle Records my very first record deal was in '96 by some friends here in Baltimore that started a label called Gargoyle Records. the label was breaks and at the time that was what i was doing.
I see "thirteen" as your most played track,as Timo Maas was giving it heavy plays @ Gatecrasher at that time-Which of your records do you feel
Brian Stillwater "Thirteen" Undercurrent UK
I try not to categorise music, but how would you describe your individual style? and how has this evolved through time?
hmmm... its seems to be constantly changing, that's the beauty of "progressive music". i have always been into the tribal thing and over the past few years from playing more globally i have tended to get a bit more techy & minimal with my sound...
Producing music but have the most fantastic feel to it, which track did you have the most fun producing?
i dunno... every tack i make has its fun parts and not so fun parts during the production. although there was good fun had during the Molecule sessions (a trip hop project i did a few years back with my friend Don Corrieri) and the Stillwater & Gardel sessions had a few laughs. its fun to work with other artists, we tend to get pissed and just have a good time (but not always!) ;)
I cannot begin to imagine what must go through your head when a DJ drops one of your productions, can you describe the feeling when you hear a fellow DJ play your tracks?
its the ultimate compliment, even if it wasn't meant to be one...
You touched on Undercurrent as an outlet for you, who else are you signed to?
Undercurrent, Imago Gramophone, & Mechanism
What new Stillwater magic is forthcoming?
i recently finished a new tune called "Ayahauscha" and a few collaborations with Jondi & Spesh, Darko of the Sleepfreaks, and another with Chris Cargo (under the name Knuckle Deep). There is also a remix for Stellar Records in the works as well as some others & more originals...
(on the DJ front: ) Where abouts have you had the opportunity to DJ?
all over...
For a bedroom DJ its always a conquest to get that first elusive DJ gig, where was yours?
my first gig was here in Maryland at a small rave. still a very fond memory and the promoter has become one of my best friends over the years...
How did it feel to be at the head of the "hallowed turntables"?
that this was what i was meant to be doing...
From your first gig to your most recent-the memories must be building fast!. what would you say is the most memorable place you have played at? ..and why?
oh there has been so many good times for many different reasons... some of my favorite clubs would be Qool (San Francisco), Club Q (Zurich), Cerotonin (Scottland),
Are there any Stillwater weekly's/monthly's ?
i currently do a monthly here in Baltimore called "Dirty".
