© Lost Witness i:Vibes speaks with one of the duo that is behind Lost Witness disguise. Simon Paul talk to us about their first release, Coldplay unreleased remix, his upcoming releases and about his two new labels.

Lost Witness, a name associated with hits such as Red Sun Rising, 7 Colours, and the more recent "Did I Dream" which was hugely remixed by DJ Tiesto on Data Records. Here, Simon Paul, one half of Lost Witness speaks to i:Vibes about this and that.

- To start off, please tell everyone a bit about your backgrounds, what you do, your influences, likes and dislikes.

I started DJing when I was 14 and there wasn't a house record on the planet so to speak....so I was lucky enough to be right in the thick of it from 86 on when house found it's original Chicago roots. My father was a big band pianist so lunch times at home were a JAZZFEST which is why I still like jazz today. Originally I wanted to be a footballer but ended up going to a grammar school that only had a Rugby team so any dreams of that faded by the time I turned my attention to the decks. I'm quite eclectic when it comes to like and dislike in music it’s all a mood thing for me...there is a right time and right place for any type of music BUT METAL IS A BIG NO!!

- Your production Red Sun Rising has arguably been one of the tracks which marks the epic balaeric style trance in 1999 and has been said to be one of the best productions from Lost Witness to date. What do you guys feel about the production, and with Ibiza looming nearer and nearer, are there any big balaeric tunes for this year?

It’s always nice when any of your tunes is appreciated but Red Sun does pop up as a favorite of many.... I suppose the idea was to capture the "feel" of Ibiza in a record and I was always happy with the Original Mix obviously it would have been great if it had of been bigger than Happiness but that was a tough act to follow.....!!!

- Having put out a number of releases under your Lost Witness guise for the past couple of years, is there any plan to diverge in terms of your musical style?

Yes the Bomb Factory mix of "Did I Dream" is produced by us so that reflects a change in mood and direction as far as having the Freedom to do what you like BUT Lost Witness will always be a vocal trance outfit........freedom to produce what you like when you like is a pleasure.

- How do you see the trance scene evolving this year? And what are Lost Witness’ plans to adapt to that in terms of upcoming productions?

Well personally i see trance as the main stay in IBIZA this year and most A & R in the UK are still after big trance records i reckon there will be a few big instrumentals BUT vocals is always where its at. If i had to tip off one record it would be ANGEL by KIRA......funny enough i will have about 4 or five records out in IBIZA this year so hopefully it will be a good one.

- Speaking of which, what’s in the pipeline for productions and remixes for the upcoming months?

”Movers and Shakers” is signed to 23/7 a Ministry off shoot but as yet it hasn't been released...its disappointing coz it has the potential to be a big record...”
MPK Voodoo...(how unlucky can i be) i produced this track with Paul Mendez from Room At The Top and the other Si we had two deals on the table but at the last minute A Guy Called Gerald who wrote the original Voodoo Ray blocked it .....We are still in talks so fingers crossed...
I have been doing some co-writes too i have a track Delerious vs Si Paul written with Dutch producer Ron VD Beuken the guy behind The Mystery he has just remixed it and my version/ remix should be done soon...I’ve also got tracks with Virgo 9 and Paul Janes amongst others so all busy at this end.
Houston is currently being remixed by Oro Verde Dutch producers and could be a big summer trancer...

- Finally, are there any particular artists / DJs you have admired? Or feel have great potential during 2002 and beyond?

Although not in my preferred style i think Lawler is great.... and Pete Tong remains as eclectic as ever...as far as producers go i would say watch Altitude who are signed to Bonzai......producer Steve Gibbs has the potential to be massive,

- Are there any plans for an artist album or mix album from Lost Witness and if so what can we expect from it?

At the moment it suits us to continue releasing singles i suppose if we ever do enough we could do a "best of album.....

- Can you tell us what happened with Coldplay - Trouble remix? What it never got released?

Don't!!!!! that could have been our first number one and i think Coldplay blocked it coz it would have been a bigger hit than the original...obviously they said "oh it doesn't fit in with the bands plans......" but that's just management bollox....I’m very bitter about this coz we did EVERYTHING by the book. we could have sold thousands of whites ...instead our original was bootlegged a further five times.......which just shows the demand....the fact is Coldplay have said no not for any reason other than they Can....well don't choke on your Champagne lads and mind how you go in your Ferraris, once upon a time Coldplay were nothing and now they are massive...they know full well what difference a big record makes.....they just denied us our chance.....!!! still onwards and up eh?

- Finally "Did I Dream" it has a release date after being promo for a while. Can you tell us about it? Also is there a new remix from Minimalistix for it?
This record is two years in the making....and was requested by the Ministry MD so the fact it has taken this long to release is very disappointing...still its on its way early reactions are strong....the minimalistix mix is great coz it sounds so obviously like Minimalistix......!!

- We know you are A&R at the new Label called "Pussycat Records"? Can you tell us about it? What kind of music will come from it? If there are any releases already and upcoming releases?

We put our first record "Slammin" out late last year and for a first release it did well and was well received.....we have just picked up a new track form Holland called Fist Funck by Master Tempo its typical Dutch pumpin house...but with great potential...then we will look to start putting more releases out...
I don't want to stick necessarily to pumping house but it does have to reflect what the Pussycat club is about.....

I have also started a new label with producer D. Ramirez called VUDU, which will be underground house featuring tracks from the Filterheadz, Cuba 2 and more
