The first studio album from the Chemical Brothers for five years is due out in July. It's been 20 years since they their debut album and no doubt the sound has been tweaked since the early days. Just what is in store for the new long player?
If you were in my generation then The Chemical Brothers will be one dance act that got you hooked into the world of electronic dance music back in the 1990’s. They were originally the ‘Dust’ Brothers but due to a copyright they had to change to Chemical. They are not real brothers, but have known each other since 1988 after attending Manchester University. Their debut album has a cult status and I’m sure ‘Exit Planet Dust’ is gathering dust in many dance fans CD collection. I know it is mine, but it’s not as dusty as some of the others.
Spin forward 20 years and its time for a new chapter for the Chemical Brothers. You will be glad they have not changed their style to cheesy house and spend evenings taking babysitting Martin Garrix. There last album, was only a small 8 track sampler called ‘Further’ which if I’m honest I don’t remember very well. It’s can’t have been that good but may well be worth a revisit just to see what the musical style was on the last outing.
The new album is a full on return to studio form with 11 tracks on the standard edition and a further four exclusive bonus tracks on the iTunes bonus edition. I do hope they plan to release a CD version, or even a full on LP edition for those who like the traditional feel to modern music. What of these 11 tracks? Only one has had an outing via a Spotify link and small looping sample on the Chemical Brothers website. The initial impression is it sounds very electrical and Chemical Brothers style sounding. I’ve not used Spotify for a fair while but I urge you to not be as lazy as me and log in to check out the full version of the new single ‘Sometimes I Feel So Deserted’.
In today’s very saturated scene of dance music and so much bollocks floating around, I do like to see the artists who made the classic today’s generation were inspired by refresh their name with new sounds. The only question for this new album, are the new sounds any good? I’m sure they will be. The further good news for Chemical Brothers fans is they will be performing a lot of live gigs over the summer so check out their tour schedule on their website to see where you can see them, I’m sure they will rock out a few old classics amongst the new stuff to.
