That seems to be the policy of this years DJ Mag Top 100 as Stamen releases a document of how he went from being the worlds 83rd best DJ to not even in the top 150 because he can't pay the best part of a grand for an advert...
The well seasoned dance music fans amongst you all may well have the same opinion as mine about the integrated of the DJ Mag Top 100 poll. There is a reason why I don’t put anything on here to promote the poll and frown upon any communication requesting my vote. For me, it’s Quite simply because the poll is complete bollocks. We all have our favourite DJ’s so support them by buying their records and attending their shows to appreciate their skills live in person.
An interesting piece of reading from house producer Stamen this week with his experiences with the Poll this year has come to light. It seems that to be featured in the Top 100 you need to have the readies to pay for advertising first. The cut of this story is they informed Stamen he was going to be number 83 in the poll, offered him advertising space next to his profile and when he said he could not afford the minimum £800 for a slot booted him out of the Top 100 completed without able to give any other reason than saying his votes were rigged. Of course, they could not provide any evidence of this or how they came to the conclusion that his votes were rigged.
It got me thinking that if you remember a few years ago when they booted Christopher Lawrence out of the Top 100 it was because his cheque bounced. Of course that’s just a cheap pun; Christopher Lawrence is one of the most integral gentlemen on the scene and one of my personal favourite producers.
You can read the full statement by Stamen on his Facebook blog along with the letters he received from DJ Mag to prove he’s not just making this up. I’m sure DJ Mag will have a comment for this but it’s yet another example of just how rigged this poll is.
