Jay Welsh is steadily making a major fuss amongst the big DJ\'s. The creation of so many excellent tracks and his own personal style embedded onto remixes-makes you stand back in awe of this mans talent!
For many of us music is and will only be a hobby, what made you get into it seriously?
"Ive always been serious about music, its the most powerful medium of expression. I just had to wait for the right oppertunity to channel it. Ive been writing vocals since I was 13-14 years old and going to music college helped me utilise the technical side which meant I could produce the total production. "
What was your first released track? ..and on what label?
"My 1st released track was on a label called concept records (uk) 94 ANGELES - KEEPER OF THE DREAM which I produced with weekend worlds Martin Cartledge."
Did you feel there were times where you weren't going to make it?
"I dont think I have made it. I am happy to do what I do for a living and thats good enough for me. Fame takes the place of what musics really about. So I dont want to make it in a sense as a famous artist just a respected one. I am never happy with the music I have produced so far . I feel I can do much, much better. And produce much, much more meterial."
Who did you 'look up to' when starting out?
"I respected all artists who could create a vibe that touched and inspired me. I dont want to single people out because at the time it was the whole scene that inspired me and not individuals. "
Moving up-to-date, who or what influences you now to produce your sound?
"My greatest passion is soundtrack meterial. I love VANGELIS, John Williams, etc. Im really into warm, emotional music that can take you to another place (substance free). The Lord of the rings soundtrack, 1492 vangelis are big favourites of mine. I like soft Jazz Diana Krall is also a favourite as well as popular bands like Massive attack, U2."
Your records get played by many of the top DJ's..whats the feeling like when
"I am grateful that sometimes some of the people who I admire return the complement by supporting the latest project. The power of the DJ is one of the great downfalls of the scene. Whether a DJ plays your track can make or break you. The scene has changed in a sense that people dont seek out their own music, they are influenced by the media machine that follows others. Dont get me wrong I think its a hard job for the DJ's out their to get everything right. Its just that Dance DJ's should be pioneers and not record pluggers. Todays DJ is more bothered about seeking and keeping fame at all costs."
'Waiting' was an absolute monster for you, with Deep Dish signing it to his Global Underground. What do you feel has been the most successful release?
"Nat Monday - waiting is probably my biggest track in recent years on which I penned and performed the vocal as well as producing the musical content with DJ Nat Monday. I also did a track on Perfecto around 94/95 ANGELES - ITS ALIVE/SHINE which I produced with martin cartledge. "
Your main productions have been signed to Method and Distinctive, but there are more key labels for you. Which labels have you released on?
"I have my own Black Ice label and also co owner of Flammable UK (you will be hearing more of this label in the next few months). I also do tracks for Distinctive, Gekko and Method. I have started some new projects in new areas which I am excited about as well as a new deep house label CONNOISSEUR MUSIQUE."
You are in close contact with DJ Nat Monday, cos of you joint productions, which other people in the business do you have close partnerships with?
"I know a lot of people who are famouse and I respect them and their space. I dont like to get too close. I let people get in touch with me if they want to talk. After all a lot these people wouldnt give you the time of day if you had nothing to give back. But their are also really genuine people who deserve more for their efforts. You work out after a while the nicer guys and gals."
Have you got any aliases we should be made aware of?
"NAT MONDAY, THE UNKNOWN, SLEEPWALKERS, BLIND FAITH, SISKO, FATHEADS, ANGELES ETC. "
What have you got up and coming?(nat monday remix??)
"We have a new Nat Monday track coming out on our new designed FLAMMABLE UK label. It has x2 trance mixes and a black Ice remix. It will be promo'd in the next few weeks."
Do you DJ?..if so..where?
"I play in my local town and guest now and again if I play abroad. Im a vinyl addict and spend loads of cash on deep house and prog."
What has been the most memorable occassion DJing?...and why?
"Las Vegas club UTOPIA. I was awake for nearly 2 days, puking my guts up half an hour before the gig due to fatigue and I had to play a 4 hour set at 2AM. I wasnt feeling too good and didnt think I could put the first record on without passing out. But when it was time to play I got such a great crowd reaction when introduced the adrenelin kicked in and I played the most enjoyable set of my life. The Floor saved me that night and I hope I gave them a good time in return. "
If you werent into music ..where would you see yourself?
"In the mirror i guess !!!!!!"
