Woody is one of the most respected trance people on German Scene. His DJ skills are amazing and his production has always been top. Also his label Clubbgroove proves that he is a hard worker.
To start off, please tell everyone a bit about your background, what you do, your influences, likes and dislikes. I started djíng at the age of 15 back in 1978, in a pub Sunday-afternoons. I was paid nearly one pound per hour as well as free drinks. It was a very funky, soulful start and there is where my roots are. I like up upon today groovy beats, combined with trancy and technoid sound gives it the right beat for me,
Your newest single is "The Farm", touched "by Woody van Eyden - All Together now". A lot of people are wondering why you changed your style of production. It used to be harder. We can see your harder edge at your latest remix of "Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall 2002". As producing for so many years I like different styles, as long as it is uplifting and giving myself (and hopefully the audience) a good mood From the Farm restyling of all together now there will be as well harder more progressive mixes. The waterfall 2002 is getting quite hype in he UK which make me happy as I so much love this track. I felt really good that they asked me to do a remix and now it looks that my mix is going to be the main mix.
Speaking of which, what’s in the pipeline for productions and remixes for the upcoming months? Is there any collaboration with other artists in the works? If given the chance to work with anyone, who would you like to work with most? At this moment I am working on a new release for one of our label own artists (DJ tom borijn), we just finished the new release of one of my side projects called Re-Flex. I have been asked to remix something for Ministry UK. All this is great as I have not been producing a lot last year due to the fact that I had many work to do with my label clubbgroove records plus we’ve build a complete new studio as well
How do you see the trance scene evolving this year? And what are Woody Van Eyden's plans to adapt to that in terms of upcoming productions? Names of music styles are always changing, what you call trance this year can be called differently next year. Music is always developing. At this moment I feel that our music is getting a bit harder and faster. I call it music to dance and party to and to get people involved in having a great time
Are there any plans for an artist album or mix album and if so, what can we expect from it? In Germany there have been some mix albums already in the past, as well as in the US and Far East. I am working on a 2cd mix album concept that will be released worldwide where I will be mixing one cd as the other one will be mixed by one of my friends as there are quite some people I would like to do this with. It’s going to be like a tribute to the world of dance. It’s too early to give you more details now, sorry.
Finally, are there any particular artists / DJs you have admired? Or feel have great potential during 2002 and beyond? As I don’t have a lot opportunities to hear other dj´s it’s hard to say but I must say I like Steve Lawler’s sound. I like trance DJ Alex Morph or having such a unique style of music As far as listening and chilling DJ I really love the mix compilations from DJ Vincenco.
A lot of people are saying that your DJ performances are unforgettable. I do hope in a positive way.
From where you get all this energy and what about the fact that every single DJ performance by you is unique? I have a very positive thankful attitude to life. I have been so lucky that my parents let me do my thing in the past and that I have made my hobby into my profession. This gives me enough energy where I can build up from. If you start giving a positive vibe to your audience and they reflect this back then you get more energy, you can give more and you get more back. This is what a perfect night is about, give and take with and for the people
Where is your favourite place to DJ or perhaps your favourite gig ever and give some reasons why they are? Many years ago I’ve said in an interview that I would stop on the top, as I still have a feeling that it’s going uphill and the best it yet to come I still have to play on the best gig ever.
What have been your biggest records in the box over the past couple of weeks? I am playing a track called Dutch Courage (out on Pussycat records) which is fabulous. The new Armin van Buuren feat.Ray (only on CDR) is an unbelievable great track. Oh yes…..Lavamath called Breath is so massive. RANK1 – Awakening is huuuuge. At the moment there is lot good music out.
Let's talk about your label Clubbgroove Records. One of the biggest German labels. How it started and who else is involved? Where you think Clubbgroove is going to point at in the future? Will it stay near the trance area or will it cover more areas with sub labels? Clubbgroove started some 5 years ago as we back then where not happy with our label we where signed up with, so we decided to start ourselves. Clubbgroove is owned by 3 guys. It’s Andre Tanneberger (better known as ATB) Uli Poeppelbaum and I. We started it as we wanted a good platform that we and others can release on. As being quite good established on the market it proofs that we are doing something right. At present we are launching clubbhouse records as we passion house music as well. All our releases are involved with building up artists so the music is ´´ facial´´ which means we always have a face to go with the music so the artist can be booked as well and tour to perform his music.
Thanks Woody for his time and answering all these questions.
