Flutlicht, one of the best names in trance of the modern era have re-released a selection of their finest tunes from the years gone by. Icarus, Mutterkorn, Ahmea and Das Siegal have been given a re-release which you can all get your hands on and it is highly recommended...
Flutlicht: DJ Natron and Reverb together make one of the most talented outfits in the business, not only with great personal productions under Flutlicht, with plays from: Piet Blank, Scott Bond, Talla 2xlc, DJ Taucher and DJ Jean. Not only that, but remixing the likes of: The Mystery, Ian Van Dahl, Marc Dawn (Green Court), DJ Air, Alex Bartlett, S.H.O.K.K, Native and Tony Walker, Flutlicht are a force to be meddled with!
A1) Icarus (The Flight) A2) Mutterkorn B1) Ahmea B2) Das Siegal
A1) Icarus (The Flight) Flutlicht's power and wisdom on the production level, of creating hard-uplifting trance is clearly shown in this track. With the tale of Icarus (which I'm sure you all know) being the focus point, these guys have created a tune to go with it, but not just any old tune, one that suits it perfectly. With metal sounding stabs and hard-edged synths before the breakdown, all that can be felt is energy and style. When the breakdown does arrive, a euphoric 'floating on the air' sound and emotive synths just eat the dancefloor and lift it into a heavenly state. Do NOT under-estimate the power of this tune. It has euphoric synths and melodies with a hard-edged beat and bassline behind it, a track that would appeal to most trance lovers.
A2) Mutterkorn Mutterkorn is probably the most well known of the tracks as it featured on Gatecrasher's Global Sound System CD, and with it's unique sound, who could blame it? This has acid synths, fast and driving beats, blissful melodies and an army of DJs who hammered back in '99, Flutlicht and Mutterkorn are a deadly foe, striking dancefloors across Europe. This track has a long and winding breakdown, it draws the listener in. Soft sounding, classical styled melodies come in, some acid synths and then snare to the climax. Thats when it hits you! The tune still slowly builds into a tune that sounds familar but doesn't, as Flutlicht have created this wonderful melody that words cannot describe.
B1) Ahmea This has chunky, driving basslines and kicks, no hesitation, it's just straight in there. This gets the body moving from the start, and it doesn't stop until the end. Ahmea has the most uplifting breakdown of the bunch and the breakdown is beautiful but I really wish it were longer. The breakdown is short and the build up is short, there is no time to savour the moment or get engulfed by the music. Never the less, this creates a more harder feel to the record, and can therefore break-up a hard trance set up nicely. A cool middling track, that encorporates uplifting melodies and synths with chunky, driving and pumping basslines and beats. Great track from the Flutlicht chaps.
B2) Das Siegal Das Siegal is very different from the rest. Sounding like it could of come from an old Sega Master-System game, Flutlicht have created a happy and uplifting track. Basic beats and everything else that goes with it makes an average listen, nothing special, but still good. Breakdowns are simple but still very effective but doesn't leave you standing in shock of the beauty, but drives sweet synths and melodies instead. Nice track, I'd say more to listen to or a placed near the end of a set rather than the middle as it winds down nicely and can change the mood quite easily.
Conclusion: With it's funcky blue vinyl, and a name like: Flutlicht written on it, this surely cannot be bad. Well worth the purchase, a definate: 9/10. Maybe a multi-pack including remixes of these tunes would of taken it to 10, as there are lots of fantastic remixes out there. Flutlicht have not let themselves down though, and I hope to see more Flutlicht productions soon...
