© city rockersFC Kahuna have recently endured the test of heading the radio 1's turntables, which saw the full on electronic music sound basked in success. I:Vibes delves deeper into their background, and sees how the essential mix did it for them...

Welcome to FC Kahuna.....(Jon and Dan) [Dan main speaker]

How did you both first meet?

"We met in the late 70s whilst still nippers. Jon moved in up the road from me."

Did you have solo ventures before you decided to collaborate?

"I was in a band when I was about 15 until I moved to London for Uni in 1990. Did demoes, played gigs, wrote songs, guitar player. Fizzled out when I moved south. That's about as near to solo venutures as we got pre-Kahuna. Though I recently released a track with Carl Clarke under a pseudonym."

How would they describe your style of music? (although trying not to categorise). It has been described as electric house music, would they be in agreement?

"To describe your musical style draws parameters on the type of music you make. The one rule with sample based, electronic music (which is what we do, ultimately) is that there are no rules."

How has your style now changed from back in the days of 'bright morning white' and 'you know it makes sense' back in 1997?

"We used to use a lot of blatant rock samples - guitars etc - now we prefer to make the music a bit more ambiguous and experiment with the sound of the sample and disguising the organic elements. We spend a lot of time getting tracks together and test a lot of sound and structure options out, trying to create something different. Basically, when we got a studio set up we allowed ourselves the time and space to try and develop something (we hope is) worth listening to. It was all a bit 'get it all done in a day' before. This sort of method works sometimes but we wanted to do an album which would stand up to repeated plays and was detailed enough to remain interesting. Doing things in a hurry tends to reduce the chance to spend time attending to detail."

We have just seen the release of 'machine say yes'(album).... how long did it take to comprise this?

"We finished the 1st track in 2000. That took about 3 months from start to finish but we were working on stuff on there before during and after( for instance, we already had a version of 'Fear Of Guitars' finished and the instrumetal of 'Hayling' was 95% finished)."

How do you see the success of it so far?

"We put a lot of effort into the album so it's nice to get the props from your peers and people we meet but, saying that, I find some of the media acclaim quite hard to take too seriously. I like the fact that I think we still don't fit into or pander to 'the industry'. Still don't put up with the meritless back slapping."

Will you be taking time out of the studio now this has been completed? or will we see more Kahuna electronics to come in the near future?

"Just done a remix for Ills on Marine Parade but, apart from that, we're gonna be comcentrating on getting a live show up and running for our Cargo gig in June and Creamfields."

Again we have seen some extremely huge remixes: 'groove is in the air', 'true', 'all exhale'.. what can we expect on that scene?

"see above."

The essential mix was excellent to hear-can we expect a live broadcast in the near future?

"Cheers, it's had a really cool response from most people. We tried to do it punk style, one take with the old c-loops sampler and DJM 600 in the bedroom, sounding like it could dissolve into chaos at any minute, so it's got a pretty loose 'live' feel. None of that pro-tools thing. Plus we wanted to play records we thought people might never have heard and mix them with a few less obvious classics and stuff off the album. There's a lot of really top stuff out there and we just wanted a large part of the mix to represent some fringe electronic music that hasn't got the financial support to get it pushed in your face through the old club promotion route.
As for the live broadcast point, the cargo gig is gonna go out on XFM I think."

Where abouts do you DJ?

"Residency at 21st Century Body Rockers at a London Bridge location every 2nd Saturday. Which is ace. More like an electronic music fest / house party than a club. We get a pretty mad mix of people. A good all hedonistic combo of acid house fruggers and Hoxton trendies. But the main focus of the club is to keep open minded on all fronts. They like their quality machine funk down Body Rockers.
Apart from there we play all over. Amongst them, we do quite a bit of Bugged Out (which we love), regular spots at Fabric, Brighton's Stompaphunk is another favourite and we recently found big love for and from Sheffield's Remedy. Plus we're monthly residents at Underwater / Subliminal at Pacha in Ibiza and there are trips on the cards to Belgium, Holland, the USA, Australia and South America over the summer. So, in summary, we get around."
