Simon Marlin and Max Reich team up to make their debut single Lola’s Theme; a track inspired by Simon’s wife Lola, that has taken the clubbing scene by storm! Read on for the review.
An interesting paragraph taken from the Positiva homepage:
"Positiva is looking forward to an exciting summer following the signing of the stunning ‘Lola’s Theme’ by Shapeshifters. Shaping up to be one of the tunes of the year, the track has risen from the underground and caused an unprecedented reaction not seen since Spiller’s ‘Groovejet’. With only a limited run of vinyl promos released on hot new house label, Nocturnal Groove, shops selling limited copies of the white label sold out in minutes whilst radio stations and DJ’s alike have been inundated with requests."
The tracklist!
A: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Extended Vocal Mix) B: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Main Mix) C: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Eric Prydz Mix) D: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Alternative Mix)
A: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Extended Vocal Mix): - The track simply starts with a progressing introduction, with an all round solid kick and bassline. Soon enough, we are greeted with a more uplifting synth, and the track starts to take a more funky turn with some quality strings, and a superb catchy house melody. As we approach the breakdown, the vocals come into full effect. The vocals are quite fitting to the vibe that the track gives out, but personally I am more a fan of the dub. The breakdown just builds and builds before exploding into a crescending array of synths, instruments and basslines. The melody so funky, and catchy, will no doubt make this one of 'the' summer tunes of the year for 2004!
B: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Main Mix): - The B-Side is simply a dubbed version of the Extended Vocal Mix. From what I can gather there are no added sections, no added synths, etc. Just a dubbed version of the A-Side. Also my personal favourite, since the vocals only detract from the tracks uniqueness in my opinion.
C: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Eric Prydz Mix): - Being a huge fan of Eric Prydz, for such works as Oliver Lieb Pres. Smoked - Metropolis (Eric Prydz Remix), Futureshock - Pride's Paranoia (Eric Prydz Mix), etc, I was most looking forward to hearing what he could achieve with this house summer anthem. The bassline is very powerful, typical of Eric Prydz. The track builds quite powerfully, and we are introduced with stabs of synths shortly followed with a superb acid line. This remix is a much more 'techy' interpretation, with very powerful synths making it a quality acid house tune. There are some very unusual effects used, particularly towards the end of the track where Eric Prydz makes excellent use of some very strange sounding synths. This is certainly a very interesting take on the original, but in my opinion does not exceed the Original in terms of that summery feeling.
D: Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (Alternative Mix): - The Alternative Mix does exactly what it says on the tin. It provides an alternative sound to the Main Mix. It's quite cleverly done, with an all round more underground feel to it. It builds more quickly, with what seems a more powerful kick, and driving bassline. As the track kicks in there is an awesome effect on the break that sounds awesome. An all round good remix here, that as already stated just gives a slightly altered take on the Main Original Mix.
Lola's Theme has also already had heavy play on the radio. From the Positiva Homepage:
"Shapeshifter’s ‘Lola’s Theme’ first set dance floors alight over the Christmas period and continues to garner new fans at an incredible rate. It’s already received heavy plays on Radio 1 courtesy of Pete Tong, Lottie, Seb Fontaine, and Judge Jules; and picked up plays across the country on every discerning radio show including Norman Jay’s London Radio programme (who said the track will be the sound of Good Times 2004). Such is the track’s power that it’s also caught the ears of DJs as diverse as Felix Tha Housecat and Danny Rampling to Nic Fancuilli and ATFC."
Conclusion:
This House stormer will obviously be a contender for the summer anthem of the year out in Ibiza. Positiva have offered us with a variety of takes on the track, so with it being released on the 12th Of July, be sure to pick up your copy in time for the summer festivities!
