Steve Lawler returns with an excellent return to the mid nineties house sound for his latest production on Swedish House label Joia Records, known for releases by Sebastian Ingrosso, John Dahlback and Cirez D
Steve Lawler – That Sound (Joia Records)
Steve Lawler is well known now after several years in the nineties of toughing it out, he finally made his mark with Nubreed Volume 3 and since then, the man has had a full DJ gig schedule and has pushed his trademark dark, dirty and filthy tribal sound to the masses. Well Mr.Lawler has been very occupied in the last few months, he has finally finished Global Underground Lights Out Three, out in October with a tour to follow. He also has a few remixes out on a number of different labels. He has his regular night in Ibiza, where his dark and dirty sound fits right in with the hedonistic clubbers. He also has found time to record another track called “That Sound” on Swedish Label Joia Records.
Steve Lawler – That Sound (Joia Records 020)
A1. That Sound
For the fans of Steve Lawler’s usually out there dark, dirty and filthy tribal sound, you have been thrown a curveball with this record. Steve Lawler starts this record with a female voice going “Wah” and then about twenty seconds in, the drums are added. About ten seconds after that, the track gets going and it goes into what sounds and feels like mid nineties house. It reminds me more of the stuff that I grew up to in the mid nineties and this track is funky house, not the tribal house that you expect from Mr.Lawler. You have a funky house diva, probably a sample that sings “Listen to me sing, listen to my sound” over this slow burning bassline. I love how this track reminds you of the nineties and how it just oozes quality. I also enjoy how Lawler does not stick to one sound and he likes to experiment with his productions. This is destined to cause mayhem on the dancefloor and it will with the funky vision of Lawler coupled with the ace production of Pete Lorimer.
Conclusion:
It may only be single sided but what one heck of a slice of funky house. Steve Lawler is constantly doing what you don’t expect and this record is very indicative of it. Find this record and you will be shaking your ass as well. Record is out now and watch for GU Lights Out 3 in October 2005.
