Mike Foyle presents his tough edged alter-ego, Bolt, once more. This latest offering is something very different, and very good - fitting into Flutterspark's line of releases with ease. Watch out too for a killer 303F remix...

:: Mike Foyle Pres. Bolt - Pleasure To Your Ears

1) Pleasure To Your Ears (Original Mix)

Some of you may remember Mike Foyle's previous release under his Bolt alias. It was extremely techy and quite experimental. Whilst the underlying style has changed here, there's still a lot of experimentation, and I think a winning, if not intriguing, formula has been found. The beginning of the track is laid down solidly by tough, punchy beats, a chattering percussion and a totally irresistible rhythm. There is also a rhythmic element coming from what sounds like an acoustic guitar, strumming away in the background. Things get really interesting when the bass drops in - deep and throbbing, it fills a lot of space and really softens the low end of the production. At this point the guitar has become more prominent and at the end of each phrase it plays a really quirky little break which, as another new and different component, adds tonnes more appeal to the track. The breakdown demonstrates the vocal element of the track with the rather odd line of "Forget good sin, pleasure to your ears, for the next 40 years." A stringed pad element can be heard in the breakdown, and after the track drops back in, this element grows and grows, along with a female choir pad, until a few minutes later everything is suddenly rushing up into a frenetic and uplifting climax. After which a few twangs of the guitar strings throws you perfectly into the outro. A quality track which I find really appealing. One of the best tracks I've heard in ages!

2) Pleasure To Your Ears (M6 Remix)
The M6 Remix could easily be mistaken for a totally separate track, it's that different! A much slower pace is adopted - the track itself leans more towards electro than anything else. Slapping beats and a clicky percussion pave the way for a bassy lead which puts out a pretty damn funky line. What you do realize very early on, is that various little parts of the original are used here and there in little snippets, almost like sfx. Every now and again there's a drone of familiar grinding bass, or the distant ringing of the guitar strings. The vocal part is still there - much clearer and in the fore - but it only surfaces once or twice. The rising chord progression played by the strings are still there, lurking in the background every so often, adding some nearly unnoticeable atmospherics, but playing a very important part all the same. Overall, a rich and enjoyably funky little number.

3) Pleasure To Your Ears (303F Remix)
The 303F Remix ramps up the pace and the energy. The guitar is back, strumming out the main quirky rhythm, but the biggest changes is the bass. It's been replaced by something which is nigh on an acid line. Deep, undulating and ever energetic, it is the driving force behind this remix. There's much more vocal play in this remix, with the vocal line being chopped, effected and repeated quite heavily in places. Another very noticeable and enjoyable element is the change to the strings/choir pads. They surface later on in the track, but have been subjected to a rhythmic revamp as they now chatter away in a stabbing and stuttering rhythm. Another great take on these atmospherics. A top quality high energy driving remix for the tougher tech and techno fans out there.

Conclusion:
What a totally awesome set of tracks! The original is my favourite here, with it's quirky sounds and instruments, cool little techniques and fabulous atmospherics. However the M6 Remix provides a wonderful down tempo electro sound whilst the 303F remix really ramps things up with a high octane burst of energy to finish off this fine release.
