The mighty Lange returns to compact disc for the summer with the birth of his Intercity compilation series. Prepare yourself for two mixes of pure audio enjoyment from start to finish...

Lange has been in the music business for over ten years now and even though you might still be puzzled why it took him so long to release his debut artist album there is no confusion over the fact he is bang up to date with the latest Trance. He's been through the boom years back in the late 90's when the genre exploded like a big bang and was popping up all over the place. His early productions like 'Follow Me', 'I believe' and 'Drifting Away' made his name as a producer but his remixes back then where even better with his remixes of Lost Witness's tracks 'Red Sun Rising' and 'Happiness Happening'. He's quite handy as a DJ to with him having played gigs on all corners of the globe. On Lange’s independent label Lange Recordings, he keeps knocking out some stellar tracks and his very own Radio show, which only lunched last year, is doing very well for itself. This new compilation is named after his 'Intercity' radio show but unlike the old UK rail train this one is very reliable.

If my research serves me correctly this is only the 3rd mix compilation to be released by Lange over the past 11 years he's been releasing material. They do say quality is more important than quantity and with music that statement can never be truer. The Intercity compilation we have here is the first in a series to be released further on in the future. The basic principal for lange with this first instalment was to pick the best music he has in his DJ box and fresh new productions from his own Label with a mix of the stuff he has been playing over his radio show. The track selection at first glance looks very strong indeed with a mixture of familiar names sided in with new faces. You can tell if a mix is going to be good from just the first glance but the only outcome if you lock Lange in a room with music he likes is always going to be a good one.

Unlike single reviews I could go through each track in detail but the overall goal is what a mix compilation is about. There is a slight difference in the style between the first disc and the second. The first CD is a joyride of epic enjoyment with one massive melody after another coming at you. The new Ronski Speed is where Lange decided to set lift off with the first disc and Are You sets things alight perfectly with his brightly key'd melody and deep bass rolls. Until this I had not yet heard Lange's collaboration with Andy Moor but Stadium Four is a monster of track. It kicks with an electric bass thats gritty as the melody teases you until the break when it gets unloaded. It's the bright, uplifting feel that gets you hooked along with sweeping echo's fed into the main melody. Just when you think its all gone euphoric the beat and bass cut back in and build you up for a second helping. There is a real buzz that should prick up the ears with Ashley Wallbridge - Masquerade, a producer who I have not yet had the pleasure of before. The whole balence in the first disc is set just right with massive euphoric tracks from start to end. It's all about big melody's in here with Menno De Jong & Leon Boiler coming together to create magic on 'Last Light Tonight'. If you have yet to hear Richard Durrand's new artist album then I'm sure you'll be gagging to after 'Into Something'.

There really is not one track I'd slate on this first disc but the addition of 'Cosmic String 2009' by Marcos had me worried until I heard that Lange had used the dub. For some unnecessary reason the re-release of Cosmic String saw the vocals of Emi Jarvi get put in. The vocals are terrible, do not fit with the song and disgrace the classic production quality the track has. Shame on you who decided to produce vocals for the remake, which were done especially as the original never had any. Lange's got taste though and he's not put the vocal mix in here but gone with the dub which is an excellent update on a classic track. The surprise addition to the first disc came in right at the end for me and really rounded off what is a blinding mix. When it was mixing in something sounded familiar with the beat and a quick look on the tracklist confirmed a true classic had been brought back with 'Happiness Happening'. It's listed down as a Lange track but it’s actually a Lange remix of a Lost Witness track that was first released back in 1999. It puts to bed a superb mix of fresh new Trance in the finest way possible.

The second disc does see a change in flavour to the first with a more tech oriented approach to Trance being evident from the onslaught on Wendel Kos's 'The Pianoman'. The big breakdowns are still in force though with the title on that track preparing you for a driving piano lead and epic background chords that break up the punchy beat. Do you remember an old 90's dance track by Cappella called 'U Got To Know'? It's been given the big Trance synth update by Dubguru which works to a degree without the vocal element being added into it. Ben Preston's 'The Choice Is Yours' delivers driving soft edge beat's and a stabbing melody that gets a smooth surface into the mix again. One track that is very stop start but rich with tech influence is Mr Sam's 'Tantra' that shuffles itself in with not much fuss and although doesn’t really build up to unleash a massive melody its got something about it that reels in your interest. This second disc is quite deep at times with the rolling beats and kicks that’s give you an almost progressive feel at times. The one track that really stood out for me in here is the beautiful Martin Roth & Bartlett Bros 'Losing Gravity' which at first builds up a simple beat and bassline. It's got male vocals, which can sometimes be a hit or miss for Trance songs but these work perfectly within this track.

This is definitely one of the better compilations to pop up this summer as its been excellent compiled and mixed by one of the Trance scene's best artists. The first disc would be the one I'd choose if your into you uplifting peak's but the second discs delivers things a little deeper for those darker moods. No faults with the mixing or track placement as its spot on with each disc.

Conclusion:
Intercity summer is quite a superb double dosage of the highest quality Trance administered by Dr Lange. if your itching for a Trance fix and not sure where to look then point your ears towards this direction as you wont be disappointed by what Lange has crafted together here.
